Help renew the Regional NICU

The current Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) dates back to the original hospital construction in 1983. The physical space does not currently conform to advanced standards of health care and cannot accommodate state of the art technology.

In the past 26 years infant care has greatly changed and physical contact between mother and baby is of the utmost importance. Family contact is also encouraged. “Kangaroo Care” or skin-to-skin care is essential for parent bonding. At the moment the NICU configuration is not conducive to this standard of care and provides insuffi cient privacy.

Proceeds from the 2009 Rally of Hope will fund the reconstruction of the NICU to provide privacy for infants, mothers and families. The current equipment will be replaced with the most up-to-date technology and the open floor plan will be re-constructed into eleven individual treatment pods plus two separation rooms, an isolation room, and a family room.

Floor Plan

Dear Friends and Supporters,

It’s true… 2009 is going to be the last Rally of Hope…and it is going to raise $1.5 million for our most fragile
babies. For twenty-four years the people, businesses, and service clubs of our Greater Saint John Region - from Sussex to Grand Manan to St. Stephen - have supported Rally of Hope in fundraising that totals over $14 million… and many thousands of volunteer hours.

If you were born at our Hospital or had a baby here, you either gave birth or arrived yourself in one of the birthing beds purchased by Rally of Hope. If you ever had a blood test, MRI, or CT Scan - Rally of Hope helped with your healthcare. Rally of Hope funded surgical lasers, the most advanced minimally invasive surgical suite in Atlantic Canada, leading spinal surgery technology and the best in medical technology for Paediatrics. And while in hospital as a child you or your children or your grandchildren might have played in our Rally of Hope children’s playroom.

I hope you never had to be treated for cancer but if you did your diagnosis, treatment and care likely depended on some of the most advanced medical equipment available, much of it purchased by Rally of Hope. And if you are on dialysis, those machines too were mostly purchased with Rally funds. Echocardiograph, ER, Fetal Ultrasound, Intensive Care, and Neurosurgery were all Rally Projects.

Our $1.5 million goal will fund a complete renovation of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit…our biggest goal for our tiniest patients. What could be more important than helping babies, some as small as a pound, as they struggle for life?

Think of the joy and wonderful expectations…when a child is born. What might they accomplish in a lifetime? You can help us care for the babies in Neonatal Intensive Care and who knows… maybe you will help change the world.

If you ever had a team in Rally of Hope, we want you back. If you never had a team in the Rally, this is your last chance to experience a truly magical event. We have some exciting things planned but we also have a $1.5 million goal. Your hospital really needs your help.

Please help our tiniest patients by forming a team, supporting a team or making a donation. Perhaps you just want to organize a small fundraiser yourself or you have a business that can do something to help. We welcome anything you can do to help. And please join us June 20 for some interesting surprises and really exciting announcements. It is truly going to be - The Last, Best Rally of Hope. Call Sydney Peacock at 648-6290 to register a team or make a donation.

Sincerely,

Judy Mitchell
