Positron Emission Tomography
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is the most advanced imaging system
available. The technology is remarkably accurate in cancer diagnosis and
treatment planning. Patients are injected with a harmless radioactive chemical
suspended in glucose. Glucose concentrates in cancer tissue and when a PET/CT
scan is given tumours appear as bright spots in an anatomically accurate
position. PET also has effective application in cardiac assessment, diagnosis of
various dementias, and neurosurgery. This is amazingly advanced technology that
is currently unavailable anywhere in Atlantic Canada. COST $3.2 million
Giraffe OmniBed

A premature baby in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is placed in an incubator to provide maximum control of their environment. During treatment or assessment however they are placed on radiant warmers so that medical staff can have maximum access to the baby any yet still have a heat source from the radiant heat. The Giraffe combines the two pieces of equipment and eliminates the chance of chill or distress from moving from one to the other. COST $55,000
Digital Technology
This technology touches virtually every area of healthcare. It allows for the storage and retrieval of information in original form and the transmission of images, sounds, and information anywhere in the hospital or anywhere in the world. Digital technology also provides higher speed more sensitive equipment from imaging machines to patient monitors.
